WORLD KIDNEY DAY
World Kidney Day
World kidney Day is celebrated on the 9th March this year to raise awareness on the importance of our kidneys. Here're a few facts and figures about our kidneys.
- Kidneys remove toxins and excess water from blood, control blood pressure, produce red blood cells and also keep our bones healthy.
- They're about the size of our fist!
- According to Hospital Kuala Lumpur's head of Nephrology Department, Dr. Ghazali Ahmad, in Malaysia, the main factors causing Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is increasing age, diabetes and hypertension. 61 percent of dialysis patients suffer from diabetes and 18 percent nave hypertension.
- When the kidneys stop working, dialysis is how a person can get their blood 'cleaned'. Haemodialysis is when the patient's blood is pumped through a dialysis machine to remove waste and excess fluids. Peritoneal dialysis is done by pumping clean fluid into a patient's abdomen which accumulates waste from the blood and then is drained out.
