Difference between Psoriasis, Eczema & Urticaria

1. Definition

Psoriasis
  • Condition that occurs when a person's immune system triggers skin cells to grow faster than they usually should.
  • Typically, it takes about a month for skin cells to regenerate, but in people with psoriasis, this process happens every three to four days
Eczema:
  • ·         A set of itchy skin conditions that can be caused by dry skin, certain illnesses, contact with an allergen or irritant or even stress.


Urticaria:
  • ·         Outbreak of itchy, swollen, pale red bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin. It may also cause burn or sting. 


2. TYPES

Psoriasis:
  • ·         Chronic stable plaque psoriasis

o   The most common type
o   Plaques often follow a symmetrical pattern and usually appear on knees, elbow, trunk and scalp.
Chronic stable plaque psoriasis (Part - Knee)

Chronic stable plaque psoriasis (Part - scalp)

  • ·         Pustular psoriasis

o   Causes small blisters usually on the feet and palms of the hands.

Pustular psoriasis (Part - hand)
  •   Flexural psoriasis

o   Affect the flexural skin of the armpit, groin, buttocks and beneath the breasts.

Flexural psoriasis (Part - Armpit)
  • Guttate psoriasis

o   Most commonly in children and is sometimes triggered by a throat infection.
o   The patches are usually small and numerous and appear mainly on the trunk.

Guttate Psoriasis (Part - Trunk)
  •     Erythrodermic psoriasis

o   At least 90% of the body surface area is affected by psoriasis.
o   It is considered as medical emergency.

3. APPEARANCE

Psoriasis:
  •  Thick and red patches
  • White patches that can also appear silvery and scaly
  • The skin is thicker and more inflamed than eczema

Eczema:
  • ·         Rough, dry and leathery red patches that are sometimes dark (brown-gray in colour)

Urticaria:
  • Red or white papule or plaque due to swelling of the surface of the skin (weal or wheal)

4. LOCATION

Psoriasis:
  •  More likely to affect your scalp, face, back, palms, and the soles of your feet
  • Both the toenails and fingernails can also be affected.




Eczema:
  • Appear in the "bends" of the skin, such as the crooks of elbows and backs of the knee
  • Babies will sometimes get it on their chin, cheeks, scalp, and similar.

 

Urticaria:
  • Can appear any site of the body, including the face, lips, tongue, throat, or ears.
