What causes Vertigo?
- Most often vertigo is caused by
disturbance in the vestibular system. If vertigo arises from a disorder of the
ear and other structures around it, it is called Peripheral Vertigo.
- The most common types of
Peripheral Vestibular Vertigo are :
1.Benign paroxymal
positional vertigo (BPPV)
2.Recurrent
Vestibulopathy
3.Meniere’s disease
4. Vestibular neuritis
BPPV – Benign Paroxymal Positional Vertigo
- Benign
Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (or BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo, a
false sensation of spinning.1
- Benign – it is not life-threatening
- Paroxysmal – it comes in sudden, brief spells
- Positional – it gets triggered by certain head
positions or movements
- Vertigo – a false sense of rotational movement
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A BPPV EPISODE?
- BPPV is a
mechanical problem in the inner ear. It occurs when some of the calcium
carbonate crystals (otoconia) that are normally embedded in gel in the utricle
become dislodged and migrate into one or more of the 3 fluid-filled
semicircular canals, where they are not supposed to be. When enough of these
particles accumulate in one of the canals they interfere with the normal fluid
movement that these canals use to sense head motion, causing the inner ear to
send false signals to the brain.

Meniere’s Disease
- Meniere's
disease is a disorder of
the inner ear that causes episodes in which you feel as if you're spinning
(vertigo), and you have fluctuating hearing loss with a progressive, ultimately
permanent loss of hearing, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sometimes a
feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear.
Meniere's disease |
What symptoms are often associated with Vertigo?
Nausea |
Method of treatment?
- Clinical studies have shown that with medication
in combination with a simple set of exercises significantly reduces the number
of repeated vertigo attacks.
Medication
- Multiple studies have shown that
the frequency, severity and duration of vertigo attacks are reduced over time
during at least 3 month of treatment. Some people stop taking medicines as soon
as vertigo symptoms disappear, this is a reason they may face repeated vertigo
attacks more often. It is important to take the medicines as long as
recommended.
