WHAT IS STRESS?

According to WHO, stress is defined as any type of change that causes physical, emotional or psychological strain. 

THERE ARE DIFFERENT TYPES OF STRESS?!

Stress can be divided into two types, acute stress and chronic stress. Acute stress is short-term and tends to reduce after the problem is resolved. Chronic stress is long-term and dangerous. Chronic stress will affect our body mentally and physically over time.

WHO CAN BE AFFECTED BY STRESS?

Everyone can be affected by stress regardless of their age. Early childhood should have been filled with happy thoughts without any worries. Children as early as preschoolers can be affected by stress. Teenage years or adolescence period is a very awkward phase for everyone since we are still exploring things and building our own identity. It is understandable that teenagers often feel pressured. Being an adult comes with a lot of responsibilities and commitments, there are a lot of things that we need to think and consider. Therefore, everyone can easily affected by stress. Here are some of the causes of stress:

• Education- Some of the parents are too busy preparing their child so that they can excel in their school. They enroll their child in many extra classes which can make their child lose interest in what they are doing.

• Media – Some children get disturbed by images on TV regarding natural disasters, war, and terrorism. This happens because they are worried about their own safety and loved ones.

• Family – Children are easily affected when there are conflicts in the family. For example, divorce, death of family members, or even illness.

• School – They are expected to know and figure out their future. Parents also expect them to do well in school so that they can go to college and get a decent job.

• Work – Some of these teenagers do not have the luxury of just enjoying their school life. They may have some circumstances that lead them to work while studying. Consequently, they missed out the school life – having fun with friends since they needed to earn money.

• Social connections – Living in this digital era, everything is recorded in social media. We can see other people’s lives through social media. Teenagers often feel pressured by their peers because they feel like a need to keep up with the current trends to feel included in their peers.

• Health – Illness can cause adults to stress over and be anxious about their health

• Daily life – Adults often experience work–related stress which can be dangerous for them in the long term

• Financial – Economic insecurity is one of the major causes of stress in adults since it can affect other things in life such as health problems and family problems from financial stress.

• Sleep – Sleep problems can cause stress in adults since the stress hormones in their body are high causing them to have increased heart rate, blood pressure, and anxiety level.
